Tarique Rahman Takes Oath as PM, Muhammad Yunus Emerges as Key Power Broker

Tarique Rahman Takes Oath as PM, Muhammad Yunus Emerges as Key Power Broker

Post by : Shakul

Tarique Rahman took oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, secured a decisive victory in the February 2026 elections. However, political analysts believe that the real winner of Bangladesh’s recent political transition is Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who played a central role in shaping the interim administration and the election process.

During his 18 months as Chief Adviser of the interim government, Yunus managed to push through key reforms, issue several ordinances and conduct national elections on his own timeline. He successfully oversaw the polls while keeping the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, out of the electoral process — a move that significantly altered the political landscape.

Yunus also gained international acceptance for the elections, with Western nations recognizing them as inclusive despite the absence of the Awami League. Analysts say this diplomatic backing strengthened Yunus’s position and legitimacy, even though he did not lead a political party of his own.

While Yunus helped stabilize the economy and ensure a peaceful transfer of power, critics point out that his tenure saw weaknesses in maintaining law and order and protecting individual rights. Despite these concerns, many agree that Yunus achieved most of his objectives in a short period, making him one of the most influential figures in recent Bangladeshi politics.

As Bangladesh enters a new political phase under Tarique Rahman’s leadership, the future of Yunus’s reform agenda remains uncertain. Still, his impact on the country’s transition has firmly positioned him as a defining force behind the scenes of Bangladesh’s 2026 political shift.
