Tata Motors Set to Launch Premium SUVs Including Avinya & Sierra

Tata Motors, one of India's biggest automobile companies, is preparing to launch a new range of premium SUVs in the country over the next 12 to 24 months. These new models are aimed at expanding Tata's current SUV line-up and will include cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs) as well as traditional petrol and diesel-powered versions. This move is seen as a big step in Tata's efforts to strengthen its position in the Indian automobile market, especially in the SUV and EV segments.

Currently, Tata Motors already sells four SUVs in India: the compact Punch, the mid-size Nexon, and the larger Harrier and Safari. But now, the company is working on introducing even more advanced and stylish SUVs that will offer more premium features, better technology, and futuristic designs.

The two main SUV models that Tata Motors is focusing on for upcoming launches:

1. Tata Sierra – A Classic Returns with a Modern Twist

The Tata Sierra, a name that brings back memories of one of India’s most iconic SUVs from the 1990s, is making a major comeback. This time, Tata will offer the Sierra in both electric (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) variants. The new version was recently shown at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, where it grabbed a lot of attention for its bold and boxy design — a modern tribute to the original model.

Recently, the Sierra was spotted being tested on Indian roads, suggesting that it is now in the final phase of development. Tata Motors recently showcased the vehicle in a bright yellow color exclusively for their dealer partners. This private preview has further confirmed that the launch is near.

The design of the new Sierra maintains its classic upright structure, wide windows, and a strong road presence. Inside, the SUV is expected to offer a spacious layout, ideal for families and long drives.

Electric Version (Sierra EV):

The EV version is expected to launch before the petrol and diesel versions. It will likely use 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs, which are similar to what Tata plans for the upcoming Harrier EV.

Petrol & Diesel Versions (Sierra ICE):

The ICE version will include a brand-new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Tata is also expected to continue using its trusted 2.0-litre diesel engine for this model.

Tata Avinya – The Brand’s Most Futuristic SUV Yet

Another exciting launch on the horizon is the Tata Avinya — a next-generation electric SUV that showcases a brand-new design language and platform. The Avinya was first shown as a concept model at the 2022 Auto Expo, and it made headlines for its futuristic looks and premium features.

The production-ready version of the Avinya will be built on Tata's Gen 3 EV architecture, known as a skateboard platform, which is designed exclusively for electric cars. This means it won't be adapted from existing petrol or diesel car models but will be a born-electric vehicle from the ground up.

The Avinya range is expected to include five different models, codenamed internally as P1, P2, P3, P4, and P5. The first of these, the P1 model, is currently under development and will be manufactured at Tata’s plant in Sanand, Gujarat.

Originally, Tata planned to launch the Avinya SUV in 2025, but some delays occurred. These were mainly due to issues with the shared EMA platform agreement between Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

JLR was supposed to help develop the platform at its plant in Tamil Nadu. But when that facility got postponed, the Avinya project was pushed back to 2027.

Still, this will be Tata’s first true premium electric SUV line-up, and it is expected to compete with global EV giants in terms of design, performance, and technology.

What Makes These Upcoming SUVs Special?

Tata Motors is not just launching regular SUVs. These vehicles are packed with new features and innovation. Here’s what makes them stand out:

Advanced Electric Technology:

  • With large battery options and improved range, Tata's EVs will appeal to environment-conscious buyers.

Futuristic Design Language:

  • Both the Sierra and Avinya break away from traditional car designs with bold, futuristic exteriors and spacious, tech-loaded interiors.

Homegrown Engineering:

  • These SUVs are being developed and built in India, showcasing Tata's growing focus on local innovation and production.

Expanded SUV Portfolio:

  • Tata already has a strong hold in the SUV market. These new models will give customers more options in the premium category.
