Tesla is planning to let people in Austin, Texas, try rides in its self-driving robotaxi cars starting June 22. Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla, said this date could change because the company wants to be extra careful about safety.
At first, there will be about 10 to 20 Tesla Model Y cars driving themselves in a small part of Austin. These cars will have no driver, but people will watch them from a distance to make sure everything is safe.
If this goes well, Tesla wants to bring robotaxi rides to other places in the US, like California, later this year. Tesla has already tested these cars on Austin streets using its latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. Musk also said that from June 28, some Teslas will be able to drive themselves from the factory straight to a customer’s house.
Tesla is focusing on self-driving cars instead of making cheaper electric cars. Many people are excited, but some are unsure if robotaxis is really ready because of safety and rules.
Not much is known yet about how people can book these robotaxi rides or exactly where they will go.
