The Houston Texans achieved a dramatic 23-19 victory against the visiting Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, driven by a formidable defense and well-timed scoring. Quarterback Davis Mills showcased his talents with two touchdown passes, while Caden Bullock made significant contributions with two interceptions and a forced fumble. Houston’s defense relentlessly pressured Bills quarterback Josh Allen, recording eight sacks throughout the game.
Despite Allen's 24 completions on 34 attempts for 253 yards, his two interceptions proved costly, marking another setback for Buffalo as they faced their second defeat in three outings. Bills running back James Cook excelled, rushing for 116 yards and securing a touchdown on 17 carries. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir also made his mark, catching eight passes for 110 yards, while Ray Davis returned a kickoff for a touchdown to keep Buffalo competitive.
Mills, in his third consecutive start, completed 16 of 30 passes for 153 yards, stepping in for C.J. Stroud, who is recovering from a concussion. His touchdown passes to Christian Kirk and Jayden Higgins aided Houston (6-5) in capturing their fourth win in five games.
The game's intensity peaked in the final minutes when Buffalo faced a fourth-and-27 from their own 30-yard line. They managed an 11-yard pass from Allen to Joshua Palmer, who lateraled to Shakir, advancing the ball to Houston’s 26 with 41 seconds remaining. However, Buffalo’s hopes were dashed when Allen's pass on four-and-6 from the Houston 22 was intercepted by Bullock, ensuring a Texans victory.
Buffalo initially took a lead in the first quarter with Cook's 45-yard touchdown, although Matt Prater missed the extra point. Both teams traded field goals in the second quarter, leading to Mills’ 2-yard touchdown pass to Kirk, which put Houston ahead 10-9. Bullock’s interception of Allen set up a 43-yard field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn.
Buffalo responded swiftly with Ray Davis’ 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, placing them ahead 16-13 before halftime. The Texans regained control in the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal from Fairbairn, leading 23-16. An additional 38-yard field goal from Prater later reduced the margin, but Houston's defense held firm for the win.
The Texans' defensive front demonstrated exceptional performance, particularly with Will Anderson recording 2½ sacks and Danielle Hunter contributing two more. This relentless pressure on Allen, who suffered 70 yards in losses, alongside Mills' essential offensive contributions, proved decisive against Buffalo's last-minute advances.
This victory reinforces Houston’s resilience and evolving confidence as they strive to gain momentum in the NFL season. Bullock’s interceptions and their eight sacks disrupted Buffalo’s offensive flow, swinging the game in the Texans' favor.
With this win, Houston improves to 6-5, maintaining their playoff ambitions. Conversely, the Bills fall to 7-4, requiring a refocus to bolster their chances for a strong postseason.
