The Office of the Permanent Secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Defence organized a special candlelit procession to commemorate Visakha Bucha Day 2026, reaffirming its commitment to preserving Buddhism and promoting Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. The religious ceremony took place at Wat Chinwararam Worawihan in Pathum Thani Province and brought together government officials, civil servants, and military personnel.
The event was held under the leadership of General Sarun Petchranon, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. Senior officials, employees, and personnel from various departments participated in the ceremony, which was conducted as an act of devotion to the Buddha and as a demonstration of support for Buddhist traditions that continue to shape Thai society.
The atmosphere throughout the event was peaceful and deeply spiritual. Participants carried flowers, incense sticks, and candles while walking around the temple’s main chapel in a traditional candlelit procession. The ritual symbolized respect for the Triple Gem, consisting of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, which form the foundation of Buddhist faith and practice.
Visakha Bucha Day is one of the most sacred observances in Buddhism because it commemorates three major events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana. These events are believed to have occurred on the same day, making the occasion especially significant for Buddhists around the world.
In 2026, Visakha Bucha Day falls on May 31 and is recognized internationally by UNESCO as an important day of religious and cultural significance. Across Thailand and many other countries, Buddhists participate in merit-making activities, temple visits, prayers, and candlelit processions to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and strengthen their spiritual values.
Officials from the Ministry of Defence emphasized that the event was not only a religious observance but also part of broader efforts to instill morality, ethics, discipline, and social responsibility among government personnel. By participating in such activities, public servants are encouraged to uphold values that contribute to harmony, integrity, and national unity.
The ceremony also highlighted Thailand’s dedication to preserving traditional customs and passing them on to future generations. As modernization continues to transform societies worldwide, events such as Visakha Bucha Day serve as an important reminder of the enduring role of faith, culture, and moral principles in building a peaceful and stable society.
Through initiatives like this candlelit procession, Thailand’s Ministry of Defence continues to demonstrate its support for religious traditions while reinforcing the importance of cultural identity and spiritual development within the nation.
