Thailand has launched one of its largest anti-drug operations in recent years after authorities seized more than 50 tons of chemical precursors believed to be intended for the production of methamphetamine. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul personally announced the results of the operation while visiting a chemical warehouse in Samut Prakan province.
The large-scale operation was conducted across ten locations in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Rayong provinces. The coordinated raids involved the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, police, military personnel and the Department of Special Investigation. International cooperation from South Korean intelligence and law enforcement agencies also played a significant role in the investigation.
Authorities revealed that the operation led to the arrest of a major drug trafficking suspect, Thapanan Thammaratthada, widely known as "Nu Chen." The suspect had reportedly been living abroad after fleeing Thailand nearly fourteen years ago. Investigators believe he maintained extensive connections to transnational narcotics networks operating across Southeast Asia.
Officials said the investigation uncovered links between several companies and a criminal network allegedly involved in importing and distributing chemical substances used in the production of illegal drugs. The network is also suspected of supplying chemicals used in manufacturing etomidate-based substances for illicit vaping products.
According to authorities, the seized materials included acetone, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid and other chemical compounds commonly used as drug precursors. Experts estimate that the quantity confiscated could have been used to manufacture up to 1.1 billion methamphetamine tablets or approximately 21 tons of crystal methamphetamine, making it one of the largest precursor seizures ever recorded in the country.
Prime Minister Anutin described the operation as a major victory against organized crime and warned that the government would continue pursuing everyone involved, from warehouse operators and transport companies to financiers and suppliers. He stressed that drug trafficking remains a serious threat to national security and public welfare.
Thai authorities have vowed to expand the investigation to identify additional members of the network and trace the origin of the chemicals. The government says its ongoing anti-drug strategy focuses not only on seizing narcotics but also on dismantling supply chains and preventing precursor chemicals from reaching production facilities in the Golden Triangle region.
