The death toll from recent floods in Thailand has risen to seven, authorities confirmed on Saturday, as heavy monsoon rains continue to impact the central provinces along the Chao Phraya River. Over 260,000 people across multiple regions have been affected by the rising waters, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited Ayutthaya province, one of the worst-hit areas, to oversee relief operations. Accompanied by disaster prevention officials, he instructed local authorities to distribute survival kits, reinforce sandbags, and closely monitor landslide-prone regions. “We have a whole team to help relieve the people's hardship and we plan to respond to your needs,” he assured residents.
While Thailand avoided a direct hit from Severe Tropical Storm Bualoi, which affected the Philippines earlier this week, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall in the coming days. Seasonal rains between June and September are common, but experts note that human-induced climate change is intensifying extreme weather events, making floods and landslides increasingly severe and unpredictable.
This recent flooding adds to a growing list of weather-related disasters in Thailand. Last month, Typhoon Kajiki caused landslides and floods in northern provinces, resulting in five deaths and 15 injuries. Historical events, such as the 2011 floods, claimed more than 500 lives and caused widespread property damage across the country.
Authorities continue to monitor affected areas closely and coordinate relief efforts to support displaced communities and ensure public safety.
