The government of Thailand has revealed strong growth in Geographical Indication (GI) products, especially in pottery, woven handicrafts, and natural material categories. These products are expected to generate a total market value of over 440 million baht, highlighting their growing importance in the national economy.
According to officials, a survey covering 27 GI-registered products across 39 provinces shows that these items are not only preserving traditional skills but also creating real income opportunities for local communities. The growth reflects increasing demand for authentic and region-specific products.
Among all products, Phatthalung sedge has emerged as the top performer, generating around 150 million baht in value. Its average price has increased significantly, now reaching about 300 baht per piece, showing how GI certification has enhanced its market appeal.
Other major contributors include Kanchanaburi black spinel, which has generated over 90 million baht, and Isaan traditional silk, which has reached more than 43 million baht in value. These products have also seen price increases, reflecting higher demand and improved branding.
Lopburi kaolin and Pran Kratai marble are also performing well in the market. These materials are used in construction and handicrafts, and their prices have risen steadily since receiving GI recognition. The wide price range of marble and handicrafts shows their versatility in different industries.
Officials say that GI certification has helped improve product quality, increase value, and create stronger identities for local goods. This has made it easier for producers to compete in both domestic and international markets.
The government has included the promotion of GI products as part of its economic strategy. Under the SME development policy, these products are seen as a way to strengthen small businesses and create sustainable income for rural communities.
Experts believe that continued support and promotion will further expand the GI market. With rising awareness and demand, these traditional products are expected to play an even bigger role in Thailand’s economy in the coming years.
