Thailand is expected to experience heavy rainfall in several regions over the next seven days, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The department has warned that some parts of the country could receive very heavy rain, particularly in the upper North, upper Northeast, East, and the South's west coast.
The weather conditions are being influenced by a monsoon trough and a strengthening south-westerly monsoon, increasing the risk of flooding and rough sea conditions in several areas.
The TMD said that from August 3 to August 5, a monsoon trough will extend across Myanmar and northern Laos before reaching a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam.
From August 6 to August 8, the monsoon trough is forecast to shift southward, affecting the upper North and upper Northeast of Thailand.
At the same time, the south-westerly monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is expected to become stronger between August 4 and August 9, bringing increased rainfall and stronger winds.
The Thai Meteorological Department has advised people living in the North, upper Northeast, East, and the South's west coast to remain alert between August 5 and August 9 due to heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated rain.
The department warned that these weather conditions could lead to:
Areas at higher risk include foothill locations, communities near waterways, and low-lying areas.
Sea conditions are also expected to worsen during the forecast period.
In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach 2 to 3 metres, with heights exceeding 3 metres during thundershowers from August 3 to August 9.
In the upper Gulf of Thailand and the lower Andaman Sea, waves are forecast to be around 2 metres, rising above 2 metres during thunderstorms.
The TMD has advised mariners in both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to exercise extra caution and avoid sailing through areas affected by thundershowers.
Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been advised to remain ashore from August 3 to August 9, while small boats in the Gulf of Thailand should stay ashore from August 7 to August 9.
The latest forecast shows that Typhoon Dolphin, currently over the Pacific Ocean, is expected to pass Taiwan before making landfall along the eastern coast of China between August 7 and August 8.
According to the TMD, the storm is not expected to enter Thailand.
However, travellers planning to visit the affected areas are advised to check weather conditions before departing.
