Thailand Probes Extortion Claims in Phuket’s Patong Area

Thailand Probes Extortion Claims in Phuket’s Patong Area

Post by : Shakul

The Thai government has pledged a thorough investigation into allegations of extortion and illegal influence networks operating in the popular tourist district of Patong in Phuket Province. The complaint was formally submitted to the government through the Prime Minister’s Office, raising concerns about activities that may violate multiple criminal laws.

The complaint was received by Ploytalay Laksmisangchan on behalf of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The submission was made by a legal representative of Bangkok Residence Patong Co., Ltd., who requested urgent action regarding alleged extortion, blackmail, organized criminal activity, and possible violations of Thailand’s debt collection laws in the Patong area.

According to the complaint, the alleged activities are centered around Soi Saensabai in Patong, one of Phuket’s busiest tourism zones. The accusations involve demands for protection payments and other forms of pressure that businesses claim have negatively affected their operations. Authorities have not yet confirmed the allegations and stress that investigations are still in the preliminary stage.

Deputy Spokesperson Ploytalay thanked the complainants for bringing the matter to the government's attention and reaffirmed that all complaints from the public are taken seriously. She emphasized that the administration is committed to the principle that no individual or group is above the law and that all allegations will be examined fairly and impartially.

The government noted that combating influential criminal networks and illegal activities remains a priority, particularly in major tourism destinations where public safety and investor confidence are essential. Officials believe maintaining law and order in tourism hubs is critical for protecting Thailand’s international reputation and supporting local economic development.

Authorities will coordinate closely with provincial officials, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government departments to verify the facts and ensure transparency throughout the investigative process. The government has also indicated that updates may be provided directly to the Prime Minister to assist in monitoring developments and ensuring accountability.

Officials encouraged all parties with relevant information or evidence to cooperate with investigators. The government stated that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate legal action if violations are confirmed, while ensuring that the rights of all involved parties are respected under the law.
