Thailand has intensified efforts to strengthen agricultural cooperation with Japan as part of a broader strategy to expand livestock exports and improve international market access. A Thai delegation led by Sarawut Nueangchamnong, Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, recently held high-level discussions with officials from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Focus on Animal Health and Food Safety
The discussions focused on enhancing animal health standards and food safety measures between the two countries. Officials exchanged views on strengthening veterinary cooperation and improving disease prevention systems to ensure that livestock products meet international requirements and consumer expectations.
Progress on Avian Influenza Zoning
One of the key topics discussed was the implementation of Avian Influenza Zoning measures. Thailand has been working through the Department of Livestock Development to establish regional disease-control systems that can improve export competitiveness and increase confidence among Japanese consumers. Japanese authorities reportedly viewed the progress positively and are continuing their review.

Expanding Pork Export Opportunities
Thailand also sought to expand exports of cooked pork products to Japan. Japanese officials expressed a favorable response to proposals involving imports of cooked pork with bone and processed pork intestines. Thai authorities are preparing additional technical documentation to demonstrate compliance with international safety and hygiene standards.
New Opportunities in Animal Feed Trade
Both countries discussed increasing trade in animal feed raw materials, including poultry meal and poultry by-products. Expanding these export channels could create new opportunities for Thai livestock businesses and strengthen agricultural trade relations between the two nations.
Livestock Trade Continues to Grow
Thailand's livestock exports to Japan remain strong. Poultry meat and related products generated more than 67 billion baht in export value during 2025, while pet food exports exceeded 14 billion baht. Processed meat products such as sausages and bacon also contributed significantly to bilateral trade growth.
Government Supports Future Expansion
Thai officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local livestock producers and exporters. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives stated that it will continue promoting products that meet international standards while helping businesses expand into global markets and contribute to Thailand's economic growth.
