Thailand is moving forward with plans to develop world-class luxury tourist trains through partnerships with private companies. The initiative is aimed at strengthening tourism, creating new economic opportunities and generating sustainable income for local communities across the country.
The proposal was discussed during a high-level meeting at Thailand's Ministry of Transport involving Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, senior railway officials and representatives from Minor International.
New Rail Law Creates Investment Opportunities
Officials said the project aligns with Thailand's new Rail Transport Act 2025, which allows greater private sector participation in rail services and infrastructure development.
The government believes private investment can help modernize railway tourism while maximizing the value of the country's rail network. Authorities also expect the project to attract high-spending international travelers seeking premium tourism experiences.
Tourism Routes To Connect Major And Local Destinations
The Ministry of Transport plans to work closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to create attractive railway tourism routes.
These routes will connect both major tourist destinations and lesser-known communities, helping distribute tourism revenue more evenly while supporting local businesses, cultural attractions and regional economies.
Minor International Shows Interest In Project
Minor International, one of Thailand's leading hospitality groups, has expressed strong interest in supporting the initiative. Company Chairman William E. Heinegg confirmed that the company is preparing a Letter of Intent to participate in the project.

The company also plans to support Thai craftsmen in building train carriages and facilitate technology transfers from European railway experts to enhance the quality of Thailand's luxury train services.
Siamese Train Project Gains Momentum
The proposed luxury train service will complement the State Railway of Thailand's ongoing "Siamese Train" refurbishment initiative, which is being developed in collaboration with the Rail System Technology Research and Development Institute.
Officials believe the combination of advanced technology, premium hospitality services and Thai cultural experiences could position Thailand among the world's leading luxury rail tourism destinations.
Economic Benefits Expected Across The Country
Government officials said the project is expected to create jobs, stimulate local economies and increase tourism spending throughout Thailand. Communities located along train routes are expected to benefit from increased visitor traffic and business opportunities.
The initiative is also designed to support the government's broader strategy of attracting high-value tourists while promoting sustainable tourism growth.
Newsible Asia Opinion: Thailand has long been known for its beaches, cultural heritage and hospitality sector. The development of luxury tourist trains presents an opportunity to diversify the country's tourism offerings while creating unique travel experiences that showcase local destinations.
If executed effectively, the project could strengthen Thailand's position in the global tourism market and provide long-term benefits for regional communities. Success, however, will depend on strong public-private cooperation, world-class service standards and the ability to deliver a premium travel experience that competes with the best luxury rail journeys worldwide.
