Former Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara of Thailand has died at 93 following a prolonged illness, as confirmed by the Prime Minister's Public Relations Department on Saturday. The statement highlighted that Queen Sirikit had been struggling with a blood infection, and despite intensive medical care, her condition deteriorated, leading to her peaceful passing at Chulalongkorn Hospital on October 24, 2025, at 9:21 PM.
Born on August 12, 1932, Queen Sirikit was not merely a royal figure but a beloved emblem of compassion, devotion, and national pride. Her birthday is celebrated as Mother’s Day in Thailand, showcasing her lasting influence and the affection she garnered from the Thai populace.
At just 18, she married King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who became the world’s longest-serving head of state before his death in 2016. Together, they embodied unity, humility, and dedicated service to the people of Thailand. Queen Sirikit was renowned as the longest-serving queen consort, accompanying her husband through significant national transformations.
Although she retreated from public view following a stroke in 2012, her legacy of kindness and grace persisted. Sirikit fiercely advocated for Thai arts, culture, and rural development, notably through her Support Foundation, which empowered women in rural areas by aiding the creation and sale of traditional crafts. Her commitment to spiritual and humanitarian causes underscored her deep sense of duty.
Globally admired for her elegance and fashion, she appeared on the International Best-Dressed List four times in the 1960s, earning recognition as one of the most stylish dignitaries worldwide.
Despite the constitutional nature of Thailand's monarchy, Queen Sirikit held immense cultural significance, revered as a motherly figure and a symbol of national pride and unity through her grace and humanitarianism.
She leaves behind her three daughters, her son King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who succeeded his father in 2016, and her sister Busba Kitiyakara Sathanapong.
The passing of former Queen Sirikit signifies the end of an era for Thailand, bringing profound sorrow and reflection for the millions who cherished her as the heart of the monarchy.
