Thailand, Russia Mark 130 Years of Diplomatic Friendship

Thailand, Russia Mark 130 Years of Diplomatic Friendship

Post by : Shakul

Thailand's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul met Russian President Vladimir Putin during the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan. The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere, with both leaders reaffirming the strong relationship between Thailand and Russia. President Putin highlighted preparations for celebrating the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027, while Prime Minister Anutin described Russia as one of Thailand's long-standing strategic partners.

Why Are Thailand and Russia Strengthening Their Partnership?

Both leaders agreed that the upcoming 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 provides an important opportunity to expand cooperation across multiple sectors. They discussed the 9th Thai-Russian Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, scheduled for August 2026 in Moscow, which is expected to deliver practical outcomes in diplomacy, trade, technology and regional cooperation.

Officials believe stronger bilateral engagement will create long-term economic opportunities while reinforcing political trust between the two countries.

Trade and Investment Receive Major Focus

Economic cooperation remained one of the key priorities during the meeting. Thailand and Russia agreed to expand bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately US$1.5 billion, while acknowledging that the current trade volume does not fully reflect the potential of both economies.

Thailand also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) to improve investment opportunities, market access and commercial cooperation. Both leaders also welcomed the success of the Russian-Thai Investment Forum and confirmed that the next edition will be held in Bangkok later this year.

How Will Thailand and Russia Expand Security Cooperation?

Prime Minister Anutin and President Putin exchanged views on global and regional security issues, including the Middle East situation, energy security and global supply chains. Both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in military affairs, cybersecurity, public health, science, education and the fight against online scams and transnational crime.

The leaders said stronger security collaboration would help improve regional stability and strengthen bilateral trust.

Support for ASEAN, AI and Digital Economy

Thailand thanked Russia for supporting ASEAN initiatives and acknowledged Russia's constructive role within the APEC framework. Both governments agreed to cooperate more closely in emerging sectors including the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, clean energy, food security, innovation and sustainable economic development.

The leaders emphasized that technology-driven cooperation will play an increasingly important role in future Thailand-Russia relations.

Tourism and Cultural Exchanges Continue to Grow

Tourism and cultural cooperation were also highlighted during the meeting. Prime Minister Anutin noted that nearly two million Russian tourists visited Thailand in 2025, making Russia Thailand's largest European tourism market.

Both governments agreed to organise more cultural programmes, including music, films and performing arts, while using the 130th anniversary celebrations in 2027 to strengthen people-to-people connections and promote mutual understanding.

Thailand and Russia Aim for Long-Term Strategic Partnership

Thailand and Russia are positioning their relationship beyond traditional diplomacy by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, security, digital technology, tourism and regional connectivity. Both governments believe that stronger collaboration through ASEAN, APEC and future trade agreements will generate new economic opportunities while supporting sustainable development and long-term regional stability.

Commitment to a Stronger Future Partnership

At the conclusion of the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across diplomacy, trade, security, investment, tourism and innovation. Prime Minister Anutin thanked President Putin for the warm welcome and expressed hope of meeting him again during the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting later this year as both nations continue building a stronger and more comprehensive partnership for the future.
