Thailand has strengthened its cultural diplomacy efforts after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held important discussions with Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in cultural heritage, education, sustainable tourism and the global promotion of Thailand’s soft power.
During the talks, Thailand highlighted its efforts to promote “Thai Traditional Dress” for inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Thai officials described the initiative as an important step toward preserving the country’s cultural identity while showcasing traditional craftsmanship, textile artistry and the historical value of Thai clothing to the world.
Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek stated that the nomination also honors the lifelong contributions of Queen Sirikit, who has played a major role in preserving and promoting Thai silk, fabrics and traditional designs internationally. Authorities believe global recognition from UNESCO would further increase awareness of Thailand’s rich intangible cultural heritage.
The discussions also focused heavily on sustainable tourism cooperation. UNESCO officials praised Thailand’s ongoing commitment to balancing tourism growth with the protection of cultural heritage sites and natural resources. Thailand currently has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and continues to prioritize conservation efforts alongside economic development.
Prime Minister Anutin expressed hope that Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan would receive consideration for inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the upcoming 48th session of the World Heritage Committee scheduled to take place in South Korea later this year.
Both sides additionally discussed future educational cooperation, including the possibility of organizing a major Global Education Meeting in 2027. Officials said the discussions reflected the growing partnership between Thailand and UNESCO in promoting education, science, cultural exchange and sustainable development initiatives.
UNESCO’s Director-General reportedly praised Thailand’s active role in international cooperation and welcomed the increasing participation of Thailand’s private sector in projects linked to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. Analysts believe the meeting reflects Thailand’s broader strategy of using culture, heritage and tourism as important tools of global soft power.
