Three Myanmar male refugees have been detained by police in Kemaman, Terengganu, in connection with an alleged sexual offence involving a 23-year-old intellectually disabled woman.
The three suspects, aged between 19 and 28, work as construction and cleaning workers. They were arrested on Saturday, Aug 8, following a police report received the previous day from a 20-year-old woman regarding the alleged case.
Kemaman district police chief Supt Mohd Razi Mohd Rosli confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday, Aug 9.
Supt Mohd Razi said all three suspects were remanded from Aug 8 to Aug 12 to assist police with the investigation.
He said investigators were continuing their work to determine whether other suspects may have been involved in the case.
“The investigation is still ongoing to identify other suspects who may be involved,” he said in the statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which covers the punishment for rape.
Supt Mohd Razi said police needed to carefully complete the investigation and give the victim sufficient space and time before finalising the probe.
He said this consideration was necessary because the 23-year-old woman is intellectually disabled.
Police are continuing to fine-tune the investigation as they establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
Police also detected a video circulating on TikTok at around 8.30pm on Saturday.
The video showed a crowd gathered outside the Kampung Enjin Gergaji Flats in Kemaman following allegations of a sexual offence linked to the suspects.
Supt Mohd Razi urged members of the public not to spread baseless speculation while the investigation remains ongoing.
Police also advised the public against taking hasty action against Rohingya refugees, warning that such actions could result in criminal acts.
The authorities reiterated that the case remains under police investigation and urged the public to allow investigators to carry out their work.
Members of the public with information related to the case can contact any nearby police station.
They can also call 09-859 2222 to reach the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Hadaza Mat Amin.
