Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) revealed on Friday that former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has been appointed as the bowling coach for IPL 2026. This strategic addition is expected to bolster KKR's bowling lineup as it gears up for the upcoming tournament.
With a prolific 15-year career, Tim Southee has established himself as one of cricket's distinguished fast bowlers. He has represented New Zealand in 107 Test matches, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals, accumulating an impressive total of 776 international wickets. Known for his precision, swing, and tactical acumen, Southee also led New Zealand in various formats and played a pivotal role in their 2019 ICC World Cup journey and their victory in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship.
Having previously been part of KKR as a player during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 IPL seasons, Southee is well-acquainted with the team's dynamics, culture, and the competitive environment of the IPL. His retirement from international cricket in 2025 opened the path for his coaching journey.
Venky Mysore, the CEO of KKR, expressed enthusiasm in welcoming Southee to the coaching ranks, highlighting the importance of his experience and leadership. Mysore stated, “We are thrilled to have Tim Southee rejoin the KKR family in a coaching role. His extensive technical knowledge and composed demeanor will be key in mentoring our young bowlers, and we are confident his guidance will significantly enhance our bowling unit ahead of IPL 2026.”
In expressing his excitement about returning to KKR, Southee remarked, “KKR has always felt like home, and I’m honored to take on this new role. The franchise boasts a rich culture, dedicated fans, and a fantastic team. I look forward to collaborating with the bowlers and contributing to our success in IPL 2026.”
His appointment is anticipated to greatly benefit both KKR’s pace and spin bowlers. Southee’s vast international experience, strategic insights, and mentorship of young talents are set to play a pivotal role in solidifying the team. As the IPL 2026 season approaches, fans can expect a robust bowling lineup under the guidance of one of cricket's top fast bowlers.
The transition of Tim Southee from international cricket to coaching at KKR marks an exciting new phase in his career. His return reinforces KKR’s mission to cultivate a strong team, develop young players, and vie for the IPL 2026 championship. Both fans and players eagerly anticipate the success that his expertise will usher in on the field.
