The Indonesian Military (TNI) has clarified its involvement in ongoing efforts to combat rising street robbery incidents across Jakarta, emphasizing that military personnel will only provide support to police operations and will not take over civilian law enforcement responsibilities. The statement comes amid growing public debate and concerns from rights advocates regarding the expanding role of the military in domestic security matters.
TNI spokesperson Brigadier General Muhammad Nas stated that military personnel assigned to assist authorities will focus on maintaining public order, increasing security patrols, and supporting crime prevention measures. He stressed that all law enforcement actions, including arrests, investigations, interrogations, and prosecutions, remain solely under the authority of the National Police.
The clarification follows a noticeable increase in violent street robberies, locally known as "begal" attacks, across several areas of Jakarta. These crimes often involve armed criminals targeting motorists and pedestrians, creating widespread public concern and prompting calls for stronger security measures throughout the capital city.
According to military officials, although TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto has authorized military units to provide assistance to police when required, no specific military-led anti-robbery campaign has been launched. Authorities emphasized that all operations continue to operate within Indonesia’s legal framework and established regulations governing cooperation between security institutions.
Recent police reports indicate a significant rise in street crime cases during May. Metro Jaya Police disclosed that law enforcement agencies uncovered more than one hundred robbery-related cases and arrested numerous suspects during coordinated operations aimed at restoring public confidence and improving safety in high-risk areas.
Human rights organizations and legal observers have closely monitored the situation, warning against potential overreach and stressing the importance of maintaining clear boundaries between military and civilian law enforcement functions. Critics argue that police agencies should remain the primary institution responsible for handling criminal investigations and public security operations.
Government officials and security authorities continue to assure the public that cooperation between the TNI and National Police is designed solely to strengthen crime prevention efforts and improve public safety. As Jakarta faces ongoing security challenges, officials say coordinated action between institutions remains essential while ensuring that legal safeguards and civil rights protections are fully respected.
