A distressing video filmed inside a Toronto McDonald’s has reignited fears about racism and xenophobia in Canada after an apparently intoxicated man was seen assaulting a person believed to be of Indian origin.
The footage, which has spread widely across social media, captures a white man wearing a Toronto Blue Jays jacket approaching the individual near the 'Mobile Order Pick Up' counter and suddenly attacking him without any visible provocation.
In the clip the assailant shoves the victim, causing his phone to fall. When the man calmly retrieves the device, the attacker grabs him by the collar and pushes him back, at one point accusing him of "acting superior" while the victim remains composed and does not retaliate.
The altercation escalates until another person, described by witnesses as possibly a McDonald’s employee, steps in and directs both men to take the dispute outside. After being escorted out, the intoxicated man can still be heard making accusations and racial remarks.
Toronto police have not yet issued an official statement and the identities of those involved remain unconfirmed. Local reports place the incident on November 1.
The viral recording has provoked widespread condemnation online, with many users demanding accountability and tougher responses to hate-driven behaviour.
The episode follows the recent fatal assault of 55-year-old Canadian-Indian businessman Arvi Singh Sagoo in Edmonton. Sagoo was attacked after confronting a man who allegedly urinated on his vehicle and died on October 24, five days after the incident.
These consecutive events have heightened anxiety within Canada’s South Asian community about increasing racial hostility.
Community leaders and activists are urging authorities to investigate thoroughly and consider stronger protections to prevent hate crimes.
