A tragic event occurred when a Qatari national was killed and an Arab resident injured after shrapnel from military operations in the region hit their boat, as reported by Qatar's Ministry of Interior (MOI) on Sunday.
The incident was discovered during standard monitoring by the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, who noted that a vessel with two individuals onboard had not returned as scheduled. This prompted a swift response and search operation.
When the vessel was reported missing on Saturday evening, maritime patrol units launched a search operation. The Maritime Search and Rescue Team worked tirelessly throughout the night to locate the boat.
According to the MOI, the rescue operation successfully located the missing vessel in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, concluding the search efforts.
Upon reaching the vessel, it was confirmed that the Qatari national had succumbed to injuries inflicted by military-related shrapnel. The ministry has not released any details regarding the victim’s identity or specifics regarding the incident.
The Arab resident aboard also suffered injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical treatment, where he is currently reported to be stable.
The MOI expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased Qatari national and wishes for a prompt recovery for the injured resident.
Investigations into the maritime incident will continue in line with Qatar’s legal framework, with all requisite legal processes being followed, according to officials.
The MOI explained that the missing boat was identified thanks to routine maritime oversight by the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security. The monitoring systems allowed for rapid detection of the vessel’s delay, enabling swift response from search and rescue teams.
Although further details about the investigation have not been disclosed, the ministry stated that requisite procedures will proceed as part of the legal process.
