Severe tropical storm Jangmi has battered large parts of Japan, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall that caused widespread disruption across transport networks and daily life.
The storm was located near 150 kilometres south of Tokyo and moved northeast with strong sustained winds. Weather authorities warned that the system was passing close to Japan’s Pacific coast and urged maximum caution for residents in affected regions.
Power outages have been reported in nearly 60,000 homes as the storm damaged electrical infrastructure. Local authorities also confirmed incidents of flooding, landslides, and fallen trees across multiple prefectures.
At least 15 people have been reported injured due to storm-related incidents, though most cases are described as minor. Emergency teams have been deployed to manage damage and assist residents in vulnerable areas.
Evacuation advisories were issued for hundreds of thousands of people across several regions including central, eastern and southwestern Japan. Officials urged residents to move to safer locations when necessary and avoid risky travel.
Transport services were heavily impacted, with airlines cancelling nearly 900 flights affecting tens of thousands of passengers. Rail services including bullet trains also faced delays and partial suspensions due to safety concerns.
Major automobile manufacturers temporarily halted operations at several plants as a precaution, while later announcing partial resumption plans depending on weather conditions.
Authorities continue to monitor the storm closely as it moves across the region, warning that heavy rainfall and strong winds may continue to affect parts of Japan until conditions stabilise.
