Tropical Storm Maysak has caused widespread destruction in southern China, killing two people, damaging infrastructure, and forcing tens of thousands of residents to leave their homes after heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding.
Authorities said the storm claimed two lives in Nanning, located in China's southern Guangxi province. Around 55,000 people were affected by the disaster, while nearly 48,000 residents were evacuated to safer locations as floodwaters continued to rise.
The powerful storm caused several dams in Guangxi to come under serious threat, with multiple dam breaches reported during the flooding.
Emergency teams responded quickly to the crisis. More than 1,000 rescue workers, along with rescue vehicles and boats, were deployed to the affected region. Two drones were also sent to help maintain communication in areas where normal networks were disrupted.
Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow in Fangchenggang city, leading to widespread flooding. Several vehicles were submerged up to their roofs as water covered streets and surrounding areas.
Rescue teams used inflatable boats to reach stranded residents and move them to safety. Local residents described the flooding as the worst the area has experienced in the past 20 years.
After moving across southern China, Tropical Storm Maysak made landfall in Vietnam.
Strong winds in the border town of Mong Cai knocked down trees and tore metal roofs from buildings. Once the weather improved, emergency crews used heavy machinery and chainsaws to remove fallen trees and clear blocked roads.
Before reaching Vietnam, the storm had also uprooted trees in Dongxing, a Chinese city near the Vietnam border. Earlier, Maysak brought heavy rainfall to China's Hainan Island before moving back over water and making landfall again.
Separate weather-related incidents also caused fatalities in other parts of China.
Two villagers died in a mountain flash flood on Saturday evening in eastern Inner Mongolia. One person drowned while herding cattle, while another fell into floodwater while trying to move a cattle herd to safety.
On the same day, three more people lost their lives in Fushun city in Liaoning province. Officials did not provide details about how the deaths occurred.
Fushun experienced several hours of intense rainfall early Saturday, with one area recording up to 32.9 centimeters (13 inches) of rain.
Flooding turned roads into large pools of water, disrupting daily life across the city. As a safety measure, about 3,600 residents were relocated to secure locations while emergency teams continued response efforts.
