Three of President Donald Trump’s top team members are going to London on Monday to talk with Chinese officials. The goal is to find a solution to the trade fight between the United States and China. These two countries are the biggest economies in the world, and their problems have made global markets very nervous.
President Trump shared the news on his Truth Social page. He said that the U.S. team will include Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He did not say who will be coming from China’s side. So far, the Chinese embassy in Washington hasn’t replied to any questions, and the White House also hasn't shared more details.
Trump wrote, “The meeting should go very well.”
This meeting was set up just one day after Trump spoke on the phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping. It was a rare direct call between the two leaders. During their talk, both agreed to visit each other in the future and asked their teams to meet and keep the discussions going.
There is a lot of pressure on both countries. The global economy is being affected by China’s strong control over rare earth minerals, which are important materials used in making phones, batteries, and other tech products. At the same time, China is facing limits on getting important U.S. products like chip design software and nuclear plant parts.
Back on May 12, both countries met in Geneva and made a 90-day deal. They agreed to remove some of the high taxes they had added to each other's goods since Trump became president in January. This deal helped stock markets around the world recover. The S&P 500, a major U.S. stock index, had been down 18% in April but has now come close to reaching its earlier high from February.
Even though this deal helped, for now, it didn’t fix all the problems. There are still big issues between the two countries—like illegal fentanyl coming into the U.S., concerns over Taiwan, and complaints about China’s economy being run mostly by its government.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has often warned other countries that he might add taxes on their goods, but sometimes he changes his mind at the last minute. This has confused world leaders and worried business owners.
China sees its rare minerals as a powerful tool. If it stops selling them, it could hurt American companies and put pressure on Trump if the U.S. economy slows down.
In recent years, the U.S. has said that China is its biggest rival—not just in trade, but also when it comes to military strength and power in the world.
