The White House has officially begun demolishing part of its historic East Wing to make way for President Donald Trump’s $250 million ballroom, marking the largest structural change to the Executive Mansion since 1948. The demolition, focused on the East Wing façade, windows, and surrounding building parts, was captured in dramatic photographs showing construction equipment tearing into the structure. This project, a centerpiece of Trump’s vision, has sparked global attention due to its scale and ambitious design.
The East Wing, built in 1902 and historically home to the first lady’s offices, is now being partially torn down despite the project lacking final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), which oversees construction and renovation work on federal buildings. White House officials insist the demolition is only preparatory work, with full vertical construction and major building changes still awaiting regulatory oversight.
Trump has promoted the construction on social media, emphasizing that the new ballroom will accommodate 999 guests, dwarfing the capacity of the East Room, which seats roughly 200 people. He has highlighted that the project is privately funded, stating that contributions come from “generous patriots, great American companies, and, yours truly,” and insisting there will be zero cost to taxpayers.
The White House press secretary clarified that East Wing offices will be temporarily relocated during the renovation. The project includes modernizing and upgrading the East Wing alongside the construction of the grand ballroom. Carrier Global Corporation is donating the energy-efficient HVAC system for the ballroom, ensuring world-class comfort for dignitaries and guests in the new space.
Construction crews began clearing trees and preparing the South Grounds in September. Trump has pledged to complete the ballroom before his term ends in January 2029. Observers note that this project will redefine the White House’s landscape, marking a historic transformation of the Executive Mansion.
Despite the ongoing government shutdown, which has temporarily closed the NCPC offices, work continues on site. This bold move has already drawn both domestic and international attention, as the Trump administration reshapes the historic East Wing into a monumental space for diplomacy, entertainment, and state functions.
