During a recent gala in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed favorable views about Canada, though he stayed ambiguous about resuming trade discussions. He characterized a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as “very good” and “productive.”
The Canadian Prime Minister’s office referred to the talks as “constructive.” However, when questioned about the prospects of resuming halted trade negotiations—suspended following anti-tariff advertisements from Ontario—Trump maintained a non-committal stance, stating, “we’ll work it out.”
Acknowledging Canada as a formidable trading partner, Trump also emphasized his rapport with PM Carney, lightheartedly joking about Canada's strong ice hockey skills.
Earlier this year, tariffs on Canada and Mexico were introduced by Trump, impacting areas such as steel, aluminum, automobiles, lumber, and copper. Canada faced duties of up to 35%, while Mexico's stood at 25%. The current Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) protects both nations from wider tariffs but is due for a mandatory review next year. If renewal terms cannot be agreed upon, the agreement could falter by 2036.
As Canada and Mexico strive to diminish tariffs and maintain duty-free trade amidst the uncertainty of U.S. trade policies, Trump’s remarks reflect a spirit of goodwill. Nonetheless, the future of North American trade remains precariously balanced, affected by ongoing negotiations and tariffs.
