US President Donald Trump stirred widespread criticism during a rally in Pennsylvania by making derogatory remarks about Somalia and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born Muslim refugee. He described Somalia as “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime” and questioned why the US does not receive more immigrants from countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
Trump attacked Omar by calling her “garbage” and falsely claiming she married her brother, prompting chants of “Send her back!” from the crowd. Omar came to the US as a child refugee fleeing Somalia’s civil war and became a citizen in 2000. She has consistently denied the marriage allegations, calling them “absolutely false and ridiculous.”
The comments align with Trump’s broader anti-immigration agenda. Last month, he proposed pausing migration from all “Third World countries” and issued new guidelines allowing authorities to consider “negative, country-specific factors” when reviewing applicants from 19 high-risk nations, including Somalia, Haiti, Afghanistan, and others.
These remarks and policies have reignited criticism worldwide over Trump’s stance on immigrants, particularly from African nations, highlighting his ongoing controversial approach to US immigration and refugee policies.
