Trump and Secret Service Dismiss Friendly Fire Allegations Post-Dinner Incident

Trump and Secret Service Dismiss Friendly Fire Allegations Post-Dinner Incident

Post by : Shweta

US President Donald Trump, alongside Secret Service Director Sean Curran, has firmly refuted claims that a federal agent was harmed by friendly fire during an incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. According to officials, the agent was struck by the assailant, who attempted to storm the event at the Washington Hilton last Saturday.

This chaotic event unfolded during the annual dinner in Washington, D.C., a gathering featuring prominent attendees such as President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and numerous other dignitaries and journalists. Prosecutors allege that Cole Tomas Allen, 31, tried to breach security while armed, allegedly with intentions to kill the president.

In a recent Fox News interview, Curran reported that the injured officer was shot “at point-blank range” by Allen while navigating a security checkpoint near the banquet hall entrance. Praising the federal agent’s response, Curran noted that the officer returned fire during the encounter, discharging five rounds in the effort to prevent the suspect from accessing the event.

Curran further stated that the assailant was not hit by the agent’s gunfire, but collapsed after injuring his knee amidst the commotion near the staircase. Other agents swiftly intervened, apprehending Allen before he could penetrate the secured dining area.

Sources from US law enforcement informed Reuters that a thorough assessment of the shooting has concluded, affirming that the wounded Secret Service officer was not inadvertently shot by fellow agents. This clarification surfaced amid numerous media stories and public speculation regarding the possibility of friendly fire during the attack.

President Trump addressed the matter while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, affirming, “They said it wasn’t friendly fire. It wasn’t us.” He expressed gratitude to the Secret Service for averting what could have been a catastrophic incident.

Nevertheless, ambiguities persist following the release of federal court documents, which suggest a different narrative. Although prosecutors confirmed that an officer discharged five shots during the confrontation, official records do not explicitly indicate that the officer was hit by the assailant. This lack of clarity has left room for speculation about the circumstances surrounding the agent's injury.

Despite the uncertainties, Curran championed the security measures in place at the Washington Hilton, asserting that the Secret Service's contingency plans operated effectively under intense conditions. He stated that the venue was “set up perfectly” and maintained he would not alter security protocols for future events.

The incident set off chaos within one of the premier political and media events in Washington. Attendees reported hearing gunfire, with security personnel rapidly ushering guests to safety while agents secured the ballroom. President Trump and senior officials were evacuated within moments of the shooting's outbreak.

During his press engagement on Thursday, Trump was also questioned about the potential of donning a bulletproof vest at future gatherings. He appeared hesitant, humorously noting his concerns about looking “20 pounds heavier” and expressing that wearing such protection could signify “giving in to a bad element.”

Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect, remains in federal custody facing serious charges including attempted assassination of the president and gun-related offenses. Investigators are currently delving into Allen’s background, travel patterns, and possible motivations related to the attack.
