Plans for $250 Bill Featuring Trump’s Image Unveiled by US Treasury

Plans for $250 Bill Featuring Trump’s Image Unveiled by US Treasury

Post by : Shweta

The U.S. Treasury Department has revealed its intention to design a new $250 bill that could bear the likeness of former President Donald Trump. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the design is ready, awaiting Congressional approval for formal legislation.

This announcement has sparked significant political discourse across the nation, given that existing federal laws prohibit living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency. Should it receive the green light, Trump would become the first living person to be featured on a banknote in over a century and a half.

The proposed bill is part of the festivities for America’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026. Supporters within the Republican party argue that the bill would honor Trump's contributions during this significant milestone and his influence on both the economy and national politics.

During a White House briefing, Secretary Bessent confirmed the Treasury Department's readiness should Congress approve the new currency. He noted that they have already begun creating prototypes and planning documents related to the proposal.

Sources indicated that the design might incorporate Trump’s portrait, signature, and symbols relevant to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Proponents suggest that this commemorative note could become a coveted collector’s item symbolizing a historic year for the country.

Nonetheless, the proposal confronts significant legal and political challenges. The Thayer Amendment of 1866 currently bars living individuals from being featured on American currency. Therefore, Congressional action is required for the Treasury to move forward with this initiative.

Critics, including Democrats and ethics experts, have voiced concerns that featuring a sitting president may undermine established traditions that prevent political exploitation of national symbols. Additionally, some lawmakers have raised questions about the necessity of introducing a $250 bill, considering that no such denomination currently exists.

Reports have surfaced of internal strife within the Bureau of Engraving and Printing regarding this proposal. Former Director Patricia Solimene was allegedly reassigned after expressing doubts about the legal and technical ramifications of this initiative.

Defenders of the idea highlight Trump’s status as a major force in contemporary American politics. Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has introduced supportive legislation, stating that this commemorative currency would celebrate both the nation’s landmark anniversary and Trump's presidency.

While the proposal is still nascent and no decisive actions have been taken, ultimate approval lies with Congress, which will determine whether the Treasury may proceed with issuing the new $250 bill. Political analysts anticipate the discussion will intensify as the country approaches its 250th anniversary.

This proposed banknote has already become a focal point of political conversation in the U.S., eliciting strong reactions from various parties on social media and beyond.
