President Donald Trump announced that he plans to nominate Chad Meredith, a former state solicitor general in Kentucky, for a federal judgeship in the state. This move could face opposition from Senator Rand Paul, who had previously opposed Meredith’s nomination three years ago.
Meredith had been a part of a judicial nomination controversy during the previous administration. At the time, President Joe Biden had considered nominating Meredith, who was supported by Senate leader Mitch McConnell. Meredith had a history of defending Kentucky’s anti-abortion laws, and his nomination came soon after the Supreme Court decision in 2022 that ended the federal right to abortion.
Senator Rand Paul had informed the Biden administration that he would block Meredith’s confirmation, so Biden decided not to formally nominate him. Many Democrats and abortion rights groups were relieved by Biden’s decision, as they were concerned about the prospect of an anti-abortion lawyer being appointed to a lifetime position on the federal bench.
On Wednesday, Trump defended his decision to nominate Meredith, praising him as a “courageous patriot” who knows how to uphold the Constitution. McConnell also expressed strong support for Meredith, calling the nomination an “outstanding choice” and stating that Meredith’s dedication to the law would benefit the people of Kentucky.
However, Paul’s office did not immediately respond to inquiries about the nomination. Three years ago, Paul accused McConnell of making a “secret deal” with the White House to move forward with Meredith’s nomination, which ultimately fell apart.
The Senate has a longstanding tradition called the "blue slip rule," which means that a judicial nominee from a state cannot move forward without support from that state’s senators. Even though this rule has been weakened for certain types of judges, it still applies to district court nominees, like Meredith. It is unclear whether Paul will have any objections this time.
Lena Zwarensteyn, a senior advisor at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, criticized Trump’s decision to nominate Meredith, calling his anti-abortion record "disturbing." She expressed concern that Meredith’s nomination to a lifetime judgeship should raise alarms for everyone.
Meredith’s nomination, if approved, would still need to go through the Senate confirmation process, where it remains uncertain whether he will gain the necessary support to take up the federal judgeship.
