On Sunday, President Donald Trump reached out with a heartfelt invitation to the family of Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard member from West Virginia who was tragically shot in Washington, D.C., last week. He conveyed his sympathies to her parents, who are feeling “devastated” by this heartbreaking event.
The 20-year-old Beckstrom was killed in an incident that also critically injured her colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, aged 24. Both were deployed as part of the federal security operations in the nation’s capital.
Trump shared that he has suggested a visit to the White House for the families involved. “I told them, ‘When you’re ready, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,’” he informed reporters. “And likewise with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”
The shooting has resonated deeply within the West Virginia community. Vigils have been organized in their memory, including one at Webster County High School, where Beckstrom was a student. Principal Gabriel Markle remembered her for her “quiet strength, a contagious smile, and positive energy.” He described her as “sweet, caring, and always willing to help others.”
Beckstrom recently graduated from Summersville, enlisting in the West Virginia National Guard in June 2023, where she served as a distinguished military police officer. Wolfe, who hails from Martinsburg, graduated from Musselman High School before joining the service in February 2019.
The accused shooter, a 29-year-old Afghan national, is facing first-degree murder charges and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. This tragic event has led the Trump administration to pause Afghan asylum decisions and temporarily halt visas for Afghan passport holders.
The funeral for Beckstrom is currently being organized in conjunction with her family by Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs, while Wolfe continues to fight for his life in the hospital.
During the vigil, Governor Patrick Morrisey honored Beckstrom’s bravery and commitment, stating, “Though her life was far too short, she has made a lasting impression on her community.” He referred to her as a “favorite daughter of Webster County,” whose kindness and dedication inspired many.
This community response, alongside federal acknowledgment, underscores both local sorrow and national recognition of the sacrifices made by these brave young soldiers.
