On Tuesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted the necessity for a unified federal regulation for artificial intelligence, cautioning that disparate state laws could hinder progress.
In a post on social media, Trump remarked, “Excessive regulation by the States threatens to harm this Growth Engine. We need to establish one Federal Standard instead of a disjointed set of 50 State Regulations.” He emphasized that without cohesive guidelines, the potential for China to outpace the U.S. in the AI domain is significant, a concern he has repeatedly addressed as crucial for American leadership.
Trump proposed that Congress could implement the federal standard either via a standalone bill or by adding it to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), stating, “Include it in the NDAA, or enact a separate bill, and America will remain unbeatable in this arena.”
This call for a standardized approach arises amidst increasing worries regarding the swift advancement of AI technology. Experts have warned about the potential risks AI poses to democratic processes, fraud, and employment stability. Trump’s strategy reflects an effort to simplify regulations while striving to preserve America’s innovation leadership and mitigate regulatory disparities across the states.
By advocating for a federal standard, Trump aims to establish a stable regulatory framework that fosters innovation and accelerates AI growth in the U.S., ensuring its dominance in the global technology landscape.
