In a statement on Sunday, US President Donald Trump declared that American intelligence has uncovered no evidence implicating Ukraine in a drone strike targeting the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, thereby refuting Moscow's assertions.
Russia had accused Ukraine of deploying drones near Putin's state residence situated in Novgorod. Russian sources contended that their air defense systems intercepted these drones, criticizing Kyiv for allegedly conducting such an act amid crucial peace discussions.
This claim emerged shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Florida for talks with Trump, centering on a US-driven peace strategy aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy vehemently denied the allegations from Russia.
While traveling back to Washington from his Florida visit, Trump informed reporters that US intelligence evaluated the situation and concluded that the target was not Putin's residence.
He acknowledged there might have been activity in the area, but affirmed that no attacks aimed at the Russian leader’s home occurred, adding that after thorough checks, US officials found no indications of such an event.
Earlier this week, Trump expressed concern following a conversation with Putin, describing his displeasure over the accusations. Nonetheless, his outlook appeared to change as he began to question the reliability of Russia's claims, suggesting they could impede peace efforts.
European leaders have also rebuffed Russia's narrative, asserting that the allegations might be an attempt to destabilize negotiations.
Trump has faced challenges in fulfilling his campaign vow to swiftly conclude the Ukraine conflict and has shown exasperation with both Moscow and Kyiv. While both Trump and Zelenskyy described their recent discussions as productive, Russia maintained that it would not cease hostilities unless its stipulations are recognized, which include control over eastern Ukrainian territories and constraints on Ukraine's military capabilities.
