US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, signalling that Israel will not carry out further attacks on Iran’s crucial South Pars gas field unless Tehran escalates the conflict by striking key energy infrastructure in Gulf states, particularly Qatar’s LNG facilities.
Trump distanced Washington from the March 18 Israeli strike on the South Pars field — one of the world’s largest natural gas deposits — saying the United States and Qatar had no prior knowledge of the attack. He described the Israeli action as an emotional reaction to ongoing hostilities but insisted that further strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure must stop.
In a statement on his social media platform, Trump emphasised that Israel would refrain from additional attacks on the South Pars site unless Iran retaliates by attacking innocent targets like Qatar’s energy hub. He warned that in such a scenario, the United States could respond with overwhelming force, pledging to “massively blow up” the gas field if Gulf energy facilities were targeted again.
Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes and Gulf Energy Infrastructure
Iran responded to the South Pars attack with missile strikes on Gulf energy facilities, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub, causing extensive damage and prompting condemnation from Doha.
The escalation has widened the scope of the Middle East conflict, which intensified after attacks on strategic targets and infrastructure across the region. Experts warn that targeting energy installations — such as LNG terminals and gas fields — threatens global energy markets, with oil prices jumping sharply following the recent strikes.
Trump’s Position and Regional Stability
Trump’s latest warning combines diplomatic restraint with a hardline stance: he called for no further Israeli strikes on Iranian energy assets while making clear that any Iranian aggression against Gulf energy sites would trigger a forceful US response. The shift appears aimed at preventing a broader conflagration in a region already rattled by nearly three weeks of hostilities.
International observers emphasise that the South Pars/North Dome gas field complex, shared between Iran and Qatar, is critical both regionally and globally. Attacks on such energy hubs risk further destabilising supply chains and amplifying the conflict’s economic impact.
