Turkmenistan Boosts Biotechnology Research

Turkmenistan Boosts Biotechnology Research

Post by : Shakul

Turkmenistan is increasing its focus on biotechnology as scientists and researchers gathered in Ashgabat to discuss how modern scientific innovations can support the country’s economic development. A scientific and practical conference titled “The Economic Significance of the Integrated Development of Biotechnology in Turkmenistan” was held at the International Scientific and Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.

The conference brought together leading scientists, researchers, postgraduate students, and biotechnology specialists from across the country. Participants discussed the growing role of biotechnology in agriculture, environmental protection, medicine, industrial production, and food security as Turkmenistan works to modernize its economy and scientific sector.

One of the major highlights of the event was the discussion on cooperation between Turkmenistan and China under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the AST Technopark and the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese professors Yinwen Bin and Gang Liu presented research on innovative biological products created from salt-tolerant micromycetes designed to help crops survive drought and soil salinity.

Scientists explained that the project uses synthetic biology and gene-editing technologies to create stress-resistant and low-cost biopreparations. These products are expected to help both countries tackle environmental problems linked to desertification, climate challenges, and soil degradation while improving agricultural productivity in dry regions.

Researchers from the AST Technopark also presented several biotechnology projects already being implemented in Turkmenistan. In the field of ecology, scientists introduced a special biotechnology using native cyanobacteria to stabilize shifting sands in the Garagum Desert and reduce soil erosion. The technology also helps improve soil fertility and supports vegetation growth in desert areas.

In agriculture, researchers developed biological products based on halotolerant micromycetes that significantly improve crop germination and resistance in salty soils. The conference also highlighted industrial environmental projects where scientists created bioremediation methods capable of cleaning oil-contaminated land using specially adapted microorganisms.

The livestock and poultry sector has also benefited from biotechnology research. Scientists developed balanced animal feed mixtures for Akhal-Teke horses and introduced alternative protein production systems using insects for poultry farms. Officials say these innovations can reduce import dependence and improve local production efficiency.

Researchers additionally showcased new methods for evaluating the famous golden shine of Akhal-Teke horses using advanced biochemical analysis. Scientists also presented pharmaceutical and marine biotechnology projects, including the production of herbal medicines, essential oils, antioxidants, and biofertilizers made from local plants and Caspian algae.

Officials said the conference demonstrated how biotechnology is becoming an important driver of economic development in Turkmenistan. Authorities believe scientific innovation and modern biotechnology will continue to strengthen agriculture, environmental protection, healthcare, and industrial production under the country’s long-term development strategy for 2024–2028.
