Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held high-level bilateral talks in Ashgabat aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries. The visit marked the first official trip by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Turkmenistan and was described as an important step in advancing bilateral relations.
The leaders discussed a wide range of issues including political cooperation, trade, energy, education, culture and regional developments. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding ties and building a stronger strategic partnership.
Strong Diplomatic Relations Highlighted
During the talks, President Berdimuhamedov noted that diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Malaysia have continued to develop steadily since their establishment in 1992. He thanked Malaysia for its long-standing support of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality and international initiatives at the United Nations.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised Turkmenistan's role in promoting peace, dialogue and sustainable development and expressed Malaysia’s readiness to deepen cooperation in multiple sectors.
Energy Cooperation Remains Key Focus
Energy cooperation remained one of the central topics of discussion. Both leaders highlighted the successful partnership between Turkmenistan and Malaysian energy giant PETRONAS, which has been operating in the country for nearly three decades.
New projects involving the development of hydrocarbon resources in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea are expected to begin soon with the participation of PETRONAS, further strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
Agreements Signed Across Multiple Sectors
Following the talks, several cooperation agreements and memorandums were signed covering science, transport, aviation, diplomatic training and educational exchanges. Universities from both countries also signed student mobility and exchange agreements to strengthen academic cooperation.
The leaders also signed a Joint Statement outlining future priorities for bilateral cooperation and reaffirming their commitment to closer political and economic relations.
Education and Cultural Links Expanded
Both sides emphasized the importance of cultural and educational cooperation. President Berdimuhamedov noted that many Turkmen specialists educated in Malaysia are now contributing to various sectors of the national economy.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the translation of works by renowned Turkmen poet Magtymguly Fraghi into the Malay language as a symbol of growing cultural understanding between the two nations.
Focus on Future Cooperation
The two leaders identified transport, logistics, banking, technology, agriculture and tourism as promising areas for future collaboration. Discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation between Central Asia and Southeast Asia through regional partnerships and trade initiatives.
Both countries expressed confidence that the agreements reached during the visit would create new opportunities for economic growth and people-to-people exchanges.
Visit Opens New Chapter in Relations
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the visit as a significant milestone in bilateral relations and said it had opened new opportunities for cooperation. President Berdimuhamedov stressed that friendship, mutual respect and shared values continue to form the foundation of relations between Turkmenistan and Malaysia.
The visit concluded with both sides pledging to further strengthen their partnership and work together on regional and international issues of common interest.
