The Philippines is currently facing the aftermath of Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, which has caused widespread destruction across the archipelago. Arriving shortly after Typhoon Kalmaegi impacted central islands, this storm has compelled over 1 million residents to evacuate as entire communities become submerged.
Fung-Wong struck the eastern coast on Sunday evening, uprooting trees, flooding numerous towns, and causing power outages in various provinces. Its effects were felt nationwide, with Cagayan, Catanduanes, and parts of Luzon among the hardest hit.
In Cagayan, rescue teams reported the Chico River overflowing, necessitating urgent evacuations. Footage shows residents trapped on rooftops as floodwaters rise. Tuguegarao, around 30 kilometers from the river, experienced significant flooding.
Aurora province reported considerable damage too, with landslides obstructing critical roadways and power remaining unavailable in many towns. “We couldn’t respond last night due to the heavy rainfall and high water levels,” shared a local rescue worker from Dipaculao town.
Samar province, still in recovery mode from Typhoon Kalmaegi, recorded the first fatality linked to Fung-Wong—a 64-year-old woman drowned in Catbalogan City due to strong winds and rain. Another death was confirmed on Catanduanes island amid flash flooding. Residents depicted storm surges transforming streets into raging rivers, inundating homes and churches.
The typhoon is heading towards Taiwan, where forecasts predict as much as 350 millimeters (14 inches) of rain in just 24 hours, prompting evacuations in at-risk areas. Meteorologists emphasize that climate change is exacerbating storm intensity worldwide, with warmer oceans and a moisture-rich atmosphere facilitating rapid typhoon strengthening.
Philippine authorities are actively engaged in cleanup efforts, while President Ferdinand Marcos has prolonged the “state of national calamity” triggered by Kalmaegi for an additional year, signaling a persistent humanitarian crisis.
The compounding effects of Typhoons Kalmaegi and Fung-Wong showcase the Philippines' increasing susceptibility to extreme weather patterns, raising alarms about infrastructure resilience and emergency preparedness.
