The UAE's participation in the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) and the 28th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP28), held in Hiroshima, Japan, from May 11 to 21, 2026, underscores its expanding role in Antarctic governance and research.
Represented as a non-consultative party, the UAE delegation actively participated in plenary sessions and made significant contributions at the Committee for Environmental Protection forum, spearheaded by Chief Science Advisor Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi. This involvement reflects the nation’s commitment to fostering international scientific dialogue under the Antarctic Treaty.
During the discussions, the UAE allied with Bulgaria to submit a working document regarding the creation of a new sub-base unit. This initiative, championed by the National Center of Meteorology as part of the Emirates Polar Program, illustrates the UAE's dedication to collaborative Antarctic science and infrastructure development.
The Antarctic Treaty System advocates for peaceful scientific collaboration and the protection of the environment in Antarctica. The UAE’s participation highlights its commitment to science diplomacy and responsible environmental stewardship.
The Emirates Polar Program's active role at ATCM48 positions the UAE for deeper engagement in upcoming meetings, namely ATCM49, enhancing its long-term contributions to science and environmental efforts in the region.
