In a pressing appeal at the United Nations Human Rights Council, the United Arab Emirates reiterated its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan. The recent surge of violence in El Obeid underscores the necessity for a resolution that goes beyond military solutions. The UAE highlighted the urgent need for a humanitarian truce to alleviate the suffering of civilians and to facilitate the arrival of critical aid.
This appeal was made during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council, convened to address the escalating crisis in El Obeid and the broader turmoil in Sudan.
In its remarks, the UAE expressed strong condemnation of all breaches of international law by both conflicting sides. The statement emphasized the unacceptable nature of assaults on civilians and civilian infrastructure under international agreements.
The ongoing violence continues to put civilian lives at grave risk, and the UAE underscored the vital importance of protecting these individuals throughout the duration of the conflict.
The UAE also urged the global community to extend the current United Nations arms embargo to encompass all of Sudan. This widening of the embargo is deemed necessary not just to mitigate hostilities, but also to limit the influx of weapons and enhance civilian protection amid the conflict.
Additionally, the UAE emphasized that initiatives focused on reducing violence must remain a priority in the collective international response to the ongoing crisis.
The UAE insisted that humanitarian groups must have the ability to safely access all affected regions without hindrance. The call for safe and unrestricted humanitarian access was made to ensure that vital aid reaches those impacted by the violence.
It was noted that consistent humanitarian operations are crucial to support civilians facing hardships in these conflict-stricken areas.
As part of the Sudan Quad, the UAE welcomed the positive outcomes from the Berlin Conference, spotlighting the opportunity it offered for Sudanese citizens to engage in discussions regarding their nation's future.
The UAE also voiced its support for ongoing diplomatic efforts from the Quintet aimed at promoting civilian-led initiatives, recognizing these actions as essential milestones toward achieving a peaceful resolution.
In conclusion, the UAE reinforced the idea that the foremost goal for the international community should be to back a comprehensive political process spearheaded by civilians. It asserted that this process must remain independent of both the conflict's main actors and extremist factions while reflecting the genuine aspirations of the Sudanese populace.
Ultimately, the UAE stated that a civilian-led political solution, backed by a prompt ceasefire, humanitarian access, and ongoing international involvement, is critical for paving a sustainable path toward peace and stability in Sudan.
