Empowering Female Riders: UAE Embraces Women in Tent Pegging

Post by : Maya Rahman

In a significant advancement for gender equality in sports, the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation has sanctioned the participation of female riders in tent pegging championships. This landmark decision underscores the UAE's dedication to broadening women's roles in equestrian disciplines, both domestically and globally.

The Federation is set to establish a women's national team aimed at competing in various local and international tent pegging events. This initiative showcases the capabilities of Emirati women, emphasizing their skill, bravery, and teamwork in this precision-driven sport.

The recent performances of two female riders, Sheikha Mubarak Al Mansouri and Meera Al Khazraji, at tent pegging events in Boudheib Village and Dubai International Endurance City have been particularly noteworthy. Their inspirational displays have encouraged greater female participation within the sport.

Dr. Ghanem Mohammed Al Hajeri, Secretary-General of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, remarked that this decision signifies an ongoing commitment to empower women and enhance their competitive abilities. The Federation plans to roll out programs that provide women with access to professional training, competitions, and a nurturing sporting atmosphere.

According to Dr. Al Hajeri, the equestrian sector in the UAE increasingly emphasizes female talent and athletes. This initiative not only promotes gender balance but also fortifies the UAE's position as a champion of equality and excellence across diverse fields. He expressed that by facilitating women's participation in equestrian sports, the Federation aligns with the nation's vision for social advancement through athletics.

Tent pegging, a sport rooted in local culture, demands precision as riders aim to strike ground targets at high speeds using a lance or sword. The increasing involvement of women in such competitions marks a progressive turn towards inclusivity, marrying tradition with advancement.

Dr. Al Hajeri emphasized that the Federation’s empowerment strategy focuses on cultivating a secure training environment for female athletes and motivating young girls to engage in equestrian sports early on. He stated, “Our goal is to forge a new generation of adept women riders who can proudly represent the UAE on the international stage.”

Emirati women have already achieved remarkable success in endurance races, show jumping, and other equestrian events, showcasing their talent and enthusiasm. Including women in tent pegging championships will further enhance the UAE's reputation within the global equestrian community.

Sheikha Mubarak Al Mansouri and Meera Al Khazraji serve as shining examples for aspiring riders nationwide. Their success illustrates that women can excel alongside men in demanding equestrian challenges.

The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation pledges continued support for equestrian sports development, organizing more inclusive competitions and introducing fresh training programs for all athletes. These initiatives are integral to the UAE's broader ambitions of fostering sporting excellence while honoring cultural heritage.

The inclusion of women in tent pegging championships represents a monumental achievement for both sports and society in the UAE. It epitomizes the nation's relentless quest for equality, the empowerment of women, and the celebration of Emirati talent on the world stage.

Through these initiatives, the UAE maintains its leadership role in championing women’s participation in sports, while also safeguarding its rich equestrian traditions.
