The United Arab Emirates is ramping up efforts for the 2026 UN Water Conference, set to be co-hosted with Senegal in Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10, 2026. The UAE's presence at the 4th UN Water Conference in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which took place from May 25 to 28, underscored its dedication to advancing the worldwide water agenda and fostering international collaboration on water sustainability.
This Dushanbe event attracted over 2,000 representatives from more than 110 nations and international entities focused on addressing key water-related obstacles and solutions.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 UN Water Conference, a collaborative effort organized by the Tajikistan Government and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The meeting convened over 100 delegates to align regional goals and enhance progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which prioritizes clean water and sanitation for all.
Additionally, the UAE engaged in the African High-Level Water Conference, which focused on Africa’s Water Vision 2063. This involvement demonstrated the UAE's commitment to integrating regional priorities, agreements, and initiatives into the global discourse on water.
Throughout the conference, the UAE participated in thematic sessions aligned with the six interactive dialogue topics of the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference. By collaborating closely with Senegal, the UAE interacted with heads of state, government figures, and stakeholders to encourage actionable and tangible discussions. These initiatives are anticipated to play a crucial role in significant forthcoming international gatherings, including the High-Level Political Forum in July, which will evaluate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6.
On the last day of the conference, the UAE was involved in talks regarding the 2028 UN Water Conference in Tajikistan. The conversations underscored the necessity of sustaining momentum in global water initiatives while building on the 2026 conference's outcomes.
The UAE emphasized the significance of the interactive dialogue themes approved by the UN General Assembly, describing them as fundamental for enhancing collaboration, coordination, and sustainable actions in the water sector.
Moreover, the UAE conducted bilateral meetings with important partners, including the Tajikistan Government, to amplify coordination amid global water initiatives, ensuring the 2026 UN Water Conference will mark a pivotal moment for future water efforts.
The UAE also joined the International Advisory Committee for the Dushanbe Water Process, aligning the conference’s closing declaration with the aspirations and goals of the 2026 UN Water Conference.
This engagement reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to maintaining continuity and consistency in international water discussions and facilitating effective global action surrounding the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi.
