In a significant move, the United Arab Emirates has temporarily halted the issuance of new visas for citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and South Sudan in light of the ongoing concerns surrounding the Ebola virus outbreak. This decision was jointly declared by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) along with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
The suspension is set to take effect from 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 6, as an extra preventive measure in response to the worrying Ebola situation affecting regions in Central and East Africa. Authorities indicated that this decision could be revised based on future health assessments and developments relating to the virus.
The suspension will encompass all new visa applications from citizens of the three impacted countries. Moreover, individuals arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan will be barred from entry into the UAE during this designated period.
Travel restrictions will also extend to those who have recently transited through any of these countries prior to arriving in the UAE. There will, however, be exceptions for individuals who have spent over 21 consecutive days outside the affected areas before entering the UAE.
Authorities have reassured that cargo flights between the UAE and the aforementioned countries will persist without any disruptions. Transit flight operations through UAE airports will remain unaffected to ensure that international travel and trade channels continue to function smoothly.
The UAE government has pointed out that this action forms part of a broader strategy intended to safeguard public health and enhance national readiness. Officials are actively monitoring the Ebola situation in collaboration with both local and international health organizations, pledging to adapt their responses according to risk evaluations and established health protocols.
This decision underscores the UAE's dedication to stopping the spread of infectious diseases while upholding a high state of readiness for responding to health emergencies worldwide. Health officials have assured residents and visitors that they will maintain vigilance and take necessary measures to protect public health.
Ebola is recognized as a severe and potentially lethal disease, transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals. Governments globally are cautiously monitoring outbreaks to curb cross-border transmission and fortify community health safeguards.
