UAE's Naseej Initiative: Pioneering Circular Textile Economy

UAE's Naseej Initiative: Pioneering Circular Textile Economy

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a landmark move, the UAE has introduced a national initiative named ‘Naseej’, designed to revolutionize the textile industry with sustainability at its core. Under the guidance of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this program aims to confront the pressing issue of textile waste, promoting a more eco-conscious and resource-efficient approach in the sector.

Crafted through a collaboration involving key organizations such as the National Projects Office, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation, and Tadweer Group, Naseej endeavors to unify efforts across government, industry, and community members, ensuring that all are aligned in their approach to textile sustainability.

With a staggering 220,000 tonnes of textile waste produced in the UAE each year, Naseej is poised to implement a cohesive national strategy. This will involve enhancing recycling systems, inspiring innovation, and fostering responsible consumer behavior, reinforcing the UAE’s pledge towards sustainable practices and a circular economy.

Naseej operates on five pivotal strategic pillars: Collection and Recycling, Awareness and Outreach, Behavioural Research, Policies and Regulations, and Circular Business and Innovation. These components are strategically designed to produce lasting solutions that minimize waste, enhance resource recovery, and stimulate sustainable practices in the textile landscape.

The initiative found its footing during COP28, where there was a notable emphasis on sustainable resource management. With backing from the National Projects Office, Naseej has progressed through a series of collaborations with key stakeholders across the textile network, leveraging public and private sector insights to drive impactful change.

To promote public awareness and engagement, Naseej will kick off various national programs aimed at fostering involvement in sustainable textile practices. One of the initial highlights is “The Fabric of Possibility,” an interactive community event scheduled for June 5 to 7 at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi.

This engaging event will invite participants to delve into the environmental footprint of textile waste, uncover viable solutions for waste reduction, and understand how individual choices can contribute to a more sustainable future. Plans are also underway to replicate similar initiatives in different regions of the UAE moving forward.

Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Court for National Projects, remarked that Naseej epitomizes a visionary approach that transforms ecological challenges into opportunities for growth. She accentuated the need for responsible resource management and community involvement, fostering a culture of collective action and participation.

According to Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, Naseej is set to create a thorough national infrastructure that integrates policy formulation, industry interplay, and public involvement towards a mutually supportive vision of a circular economy. He stressed that coordinated efforts across various sectors are crucial for sustainable progression while lessening environmental impact.

The initiation of Naseej is a notable stride in the UAE’s journey towards a sustainable economy. Through innovation and community cooperation in addressing textile waste, this initiative is anticipated to shape the future of sustainable consumption and production practices nationwide.
