Masdar and ScottishPower have marked a significant advancement in the UK's renewable energy landscape with the installation of the inaugural turbine at the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm. This groundbreaking project has achieved a new UK milestone by incorporating 115-metre-long blades—the longest to ever be deployed in UK waters, surpassing the length of a Premier League football pitch.
The wind farm will eventually comprise 95 turbines, with all 285 blades being produced locally at Siemens Gamesa’s facility in Hull, thereby bolstering the domestic manufacturing sector and job creation.
Standing at approximately 262 metres tall, each turbine surpasses the height of The Shard's observation deck. These cutting-edge 14MW turbines feature a rotor diameter of 236 metres, facilitating substantial electricity generation.
A single rotation of one turbine can generate enough energy to power a UK household for over four days, in addition to charging around 1,700 mobile devices or brewing nearly 1,000 cups of tea.
Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, called this a “defining moment” for the initiative and emphasized its significance in enhancing clean energy capacity. He indicated that East Anglia THREE is set to be the largest and most powerful wind farm in their operational portfolio, with billions of pounds invested, thousands of construction jobs supported, and over 100 long-term positions created in the East of England.
Situated off the Suffolk coastline, the wind farm is projected to provide sustainable electricity for roughly 1.3 million UK homes upon full operation, fortifying the nation’s energy security while diminishing its dependence on fossil fuels.
Husain Al Meer, Masdar’s Director of Global Offshore Wind, touted the project as a pivotal advancement for the UK’s offshore wind sector. He stressed the crucial role of international teamwork in reaching clean energy objectives and fostering sustainable economic growth.
The installation of the turbines is being conducted by Cadeler with its Wind Osprey jack-up vessel, and another advanced vessel, Wind Pace, is expected to join soon to enhance efficiency in the installation process.
The project’s 115-metre blades exceed the previous UK record of 108 metres—also produced by Siemens Gamesa. The Hull facility currently employs over 1,400 individuals and continues to invest in building a skilled workforce for the future.
With East Anglia THREE poised to become one of the largest offshore wind farms globally, it will play a crucial role in the UK’s transition to sustainable and dependable energy sources.
