UN Security Council Urges Taliban to Restore Women's Rights

UN Security Council Urges Taliban to Restore Women's Rights

Post by : Shakul

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a new resolution urging Afghanistan's Taliban authorities to immediately reverse restrictions imposed on women and girls. The resolution also extends the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until June 17, 2027.

The resolution was sponsored by China and received support from all Security Council members. It emphasizes the need to protect human rights and ensure equal participation of women, minorities, youth and people with disabilities in Afghan society.

Call for Greater Human Rights Protection

China's UN Ambassador Fu Cong said the international community hopes Afghanistan's leadership will take stronger measures to safeguard human rights and present a more open and inclusive image to the world.

The Security Council stressed that humanitarian assistance should be delivered without discrimination and that governance at both national and local levels must ensure equal opportunities regardless of gender, religion or ethnicity.

Concerns Over Recent Arrests in Herat

The resolution follows reports that at least 30 women were arrested in the city of Herat for allegedly violating the Taliban's dress code regulations. According to UN officials, a rare protest that followed the arrests was dispersed by security forces, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Human rights organizations continue to express concern over growing restrictions affecting women and girls across Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Restrictions Since Taliban Return

Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have implemented a strict interpretation of Islamic law that has significantly limited women's access to education, employment and public life.

Girls remain banned from education beyond primary school, while many women face restrictions on work opportunities and social participation. Minority communities have also reported challenges under the current administration.

International Pressure on Taliban

The United States and other countries have called on Taliban authorities to fulfill international commitments and improve conditions for women and vulnerable groups.

US Deputy Ambassador Jennifer Locetta stated that progress in political engagement depends on the Taliban meeting counterterrorism obligations and ending human rights violations against women and girls.

Security Challenges Remain

The Security Council also expressed concern about the presence of militant groups operating from Afghan territory. Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harboring militants responsible for attacks across the border, allegations denied by the Taliban.

The resolution highlights the importance of regional cooperation to address terrorism and maintain international peace and security.

Focus on Economic Development

In addition to human rights and security issues, the renewed UN mandate authorizes efforts to support Afghanistan's economic recovery. The mission will work to facilitate financial activity, encourage development projects and support initiatives aimed at returning assets belonging to Afghanistan's central bank for the benefit of its people.

The Security Council said a stable, inclusive and economically viable Afghanistan remains essential for regional security and long-term peace.
