UN Urged to Probe Killing of Indonesian Peacekeepers

UN Urged to Probe Killing of Indonesian Peacekeepers

Post by : Shakul

Indonesia has urged the United Nations to launch a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL in late March 2026. Indonesia’s UN envoy, Umar Hadi, also called on the Security Council to monitor the probe closely and ensure accountability for those responsible, rejecting any immunity for attacks targeting peacekeeping personnel.

The three soldiers—Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, First Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Private First Class Fahrizal Rhomadhon—were killed while carrying out their duties, with five other personnel injured. Fahrizal died at a UNIFIL post in Adchit Al Qusayr, while Zulmi and Muhammad were killed during an attack on a logistics convoy in Bani Hayyan. Indonesia has demanded the safe repatriation of the deceased and full medical care for the wounded.

Umar emphasized that the safety and security of peacekeepers must remain a top priority, urging emergency measures to strengthen protections, review security protocols, and activate evacuation plans in southern Lebanon amid rising hostilities. He also called on all parties, including Israel, to halt hostilities and comply with international law to safeguard UN personnel and assets.

Indonesia highlighted that repeated Israeli military strikes violating Lebanon’s sovereignty have increased attacks on UNIFIL, potentially undermining the mission’s mandate under Resolution 1701. Such actions, according to Indonesia, pose serious threats to international peace and security and could constitute war crimes under international law, underscoring the urgent need for a decisive UN response.
