Unearthed in central China's Henan Province, a remarkable artificial water channel system, nearly 4,000 years old, has been revealed, providing valuable insights into the ancient Xia Dynasty's (2070 BC–1600 BC) urban planning and governance.
This significant find emerged from the Wangchenggang archaeological site in Dengfeng and was officially shared during a recent forum unveiling the latest archaeological discoveries in the province, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Archaeologists identified two substantial artificial ditches, each about three metres wide and extending over 120 metres long, dating to the early Xia period. These ditches, aligned north-south, were interconnected with a broader moat approximately 10 metres wide, forming a sophisticated network for water supply and drainage.
Lead archaeologist Ma Long remarked that the uniformity of the ditch designs signifies exceptional engineering skills and meticulous planning. The excavation would have necessitated moving thousands of cubic metres of earth, underscoring the existence of organized labor and robust administrative structures.
Alongside the main ditches, several smaller channels, ranging from 0.3 to one metre in width, were also uncovered. These channels were connected to buildings and kilns, facilitating efficient drainage of rainwater and wastewater, thus ensuring dry living spaces.
Experts assert that the extensive and methodically arranged water management system exemplifies the Xia Dynasty's sophisticated organizational capabilities and standard engineering practices. Yang Wensheng, Vice Director of the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, emphasized that these findings serve as pivotal evidence of the early formation of states and societal advancement in ancient China.
