The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) poses severe risks to nearly three million children and young people, as warned by UNICEF.
With global confirmed Ebola cases escalating to 1,000, around 2.95 million individuals under 18 reside in the 31 affected health zones. The risks extend beyond the virus itself to vital services like healthcare, education, and nutrition, which are facing serious disruption.
As of June 19, children and adolescents account for roughly 15% of confirmed infections and over 25% of fatalities in the outbreak area.
Epidemiologists indicate that young patients with confirmed cases are nearly twice as likely to succumb compared to adults. This risk is exacerbated by high rates of malnutrition and delays in diagnosis, as early symptoms often mimic those of common diseases like malaria.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized that children are grappling with the crisis and the rampant misinformation circulating online.
The outbreak is particularly severe in Ituri Province, notably in the health zones of Mongbwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia, with cases also reported in North Kivu and South Kivu.
The humanitarian toll is profound, with UNICEF noting that at least 135 children have been orphaned due to the outbreak in Ituri, receiving necessary psychosocial support and alternative care.
Additionally, UNICEF has recently established the first nursery for infants and young children separated from their parents due to Ebola treatment, with plans to open two more facilities shortly.
Children in this region were already at heightened vulnerability due to longstanding issues like malnutrition, inadequate vaccination rates, and prolonged conflict.
Over half of the children under five in Ituri are chronically malnourished, and more than 20% have not received even their initial doses of essential vaccinations.
UNICEF warns that outbreaks can lead to escalated risks of violence, exploitation, and emotional distress, particularly threatening women and girls with increased sexual violence in such emergencies.
Disruptions to essential services further jeopardize community well-being.
The outbreak has crossed into Uganda, where 20 cases and two deaths have been confirmed among individuals who traveled from the DRC for medical care.
One child in Uganda has tested positive, while 19 others are monitored under quarantine.
UNICEF, WHO, and the Africa CDC are assisting authorities in both nations with contact tracing, infection control measures, and community awareness campaigns.
UNICEF is appealing for $70.7 million to implement a six-month emergency response, though approximately $20 million remains unfunded.
The agency stresses the need for immediate humanitarian access to affected regions, pointing out that ongoing insecurity and limited movement hinder efforts for surveillance and contact tracing.
With agencies racing against time to control the outbreak, safeguarding children and preserving vital services are deemed essential. International partners are increasing emergency response measures, while improving access to at-risk communities will be crucial in managing Ebola's spread in the upcoming months.
Total global confirmed Ebola cases have reached 1,000.
UNICEF estimates approximately 2.95 million children and adolescents are currently in jeopardy.
Ituri Province, featuring the Mongbwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia health zones, remains the outbreak's epicenter.
At least 135 children in Ituri have lost one or both parents due to the Ebola outbreak and are receiving support.
Yes, Uganda has confirmed 20 cases and two related fatalities.
UNICEF and partners are intensifying efforts to control the outbreak, protect vulnerable children, and secure additional funding as the response enters a pivotal period.
