New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has issued an immediate ban on the coldrif cough syrup manufactured by Shreesan Pharmaceutical, following reports of severe side effects that resulted in the death of 14 children in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The decision was announced on Sunday to protect public health and ensure the safety of medicines circulating in the state.
The state’s Assistant Commissioner of Drug Administration has instructed all drug inspectors to collect samples of the Shreesan Pharmaceutical cough syrup from both government and private institutions across Uttar Pradesh. These samples will be sent to a laboratory in Lucknow for detailed testing.
The order strictly prohibits the import and export of the cough syrup in all government and private institutions until further notice. Authorities have emphasised strict compliance with these instructions to prevent further harm and ensure public safety. Officials stated that this precautionary action is necessary to monitor the safety and quality of medicines available to the public.
In Madhya Pradesh, the tragic deaths of 14 children reportedly caused by the consumption of Coldrif Cough syrup led to widespread protests. Congress workers staged demonstrations in Bhopal and Jaipur, demanding accountability and action against the responsible officials. Protesters in Bhopal urged Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla to resign, holding banners with slogans such as, "Rajendra Shukla sharam karo, istefaa do" and "Masoom bacche ki maut ke saudagar zimmedari lo."
Similarly, in Jaipur, Congress workers held banners calling for a ban on fake medicines and demanding government action, saying, "Nakli dawa band karo, doshiyo ke khilaaf karwayi karo, BJP sarkaar jawaab do." Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers also protested outside Kaysons Pharma in Jaipur, demanding the immediate closure of the company, citing negligence and corruption.
AAP party worker Amit Dadhich criticised the government for allowing unsafe medicines to be sold, stating that it was an injustice to the country and its people. He highlighted that several children had lost their lives, while many others were hospitalised, some in ICU, after consuming the syrup. Dadhich further claimed that even a doctor who consumed the same syrup had fainted and required hospitalisation.
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a complete ban on the sale of the Coldrif Cough syrup across the state after confirming the deaths of 14 children due to kidney failure in Chhindwara.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s actions underline the importance of strict drug safety measures and vigilance in monitoring pharmaceutical products to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
