US Wildlife Agencies Call for Action Against Invasive Tegu Lizards

US Wildlife Agencies Call for Action Against Invasive Tegu Lizards

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In an effort to safeguard local ecosystems, wildlife officials across the United States are calling on residents to kill and report any sightings of the invasive Argentine black and white tegu lizards. These reptiles pose a significant threat to diverse wildlife in several southern states.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has made a specific appeal to residents in the southeastern region of Georgia to act upon spotting these lizards. As a non-native species, tegus represent a considerable risk to both wildlife and environmental health.

Daniel Sollenberger, a senior wildlife biologist at the DNR's Wildlife Resources Division, recommends that if residents cannot safely put down the creatures, they should take pictures and report their sightings to the responsive wildlife authorities. These officials may provide assistance or guidance for trapping and removal.

The Argentine black and white tegu, scientifically recognized as Salvator merianae, originates from South America. They gained entry into the U.S. largely through the exotic pet trade, establishing populations in states like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

These lizards can reach lengths of up to four feet and possess remarkable adaptability to various habitats. Wildlife specialists caution that tegus threaten native wildlife by preying on eggs, small animals, reptiles, and birds that nest on the ground. Their presence also poses risks to agricultural lands and private property.

Moreover, the tegus could harbor foreign parasites and harmful bacteria like Salmonella, creating additional health concerns for both humans and animals.

To combat the spread of these creatures, state wildlife agencies have initiated control and removal programs, with trapping operations actively underway in areas where tegu populations have been identified.

Experts emphasize that prompt measures are vital to prevent the invasive species from infiltrating new territories. Without timely interventions, their numbers can escalate quickly, threatening long-standing ecological stability.

Authorities continue to urge residents to promptly report any sightings and collaborate in efforts aimed at preserving native wildlife and sustaining ecological balance across affected states.
