WASHINGTON — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has publicly denounced the hardline immigration measures of the Trump administration, advocating for “genuine immigration reform” while expressing serious concerns for the well-being of migrants.
The bishops pointed out a “climate of fear and anxiety” surrounding immigration enforcement, raising questions about how migrants are treated within detention facilities. They strongly objected to the “indiscriminate mass deportation of individuals” and voiced distress over the arbitrary revocation of legal status for certain migrants.
“We are alarmed by threats to the sanctity of places of worship and the unique roles of hospitals and schools,” the bishops stated, underscoring the urgent need to shield sensitive locations from immigration enforcement operations. This statement is the first significant public commentary from the USCCB on immigration in a decade.
Since his presidency began, Trump has aggressively pursued an immigration agenda, reversing previous policies that restricted arrests near places of worship, educational institutions, and hospitals. Federal agents have been deployed across the country to bolster immigration arrests.
The bishops’ remarks resonate with earlier critiques from religious figures, including Pope Leo, who has urged a serious reconsideration of how migrants are treated in the United States. They emphasized that while nations must secure their borders, this responsibility must be balanced with justice and the common good.
The Department of Homeland Security, which manages immigration enforcement, has yet to respond to the bishops’ comments.
The USCCB’s call for reform comes amid escalating national debates over immigration policies, with increasing public concern regarding the humanitarian conditions in detention centers and the broader social repercussions of mass deportations.
